JETAA Jamaica's Picnic by the Poui is a yearly event on its calendar. It was cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic but finally made its comeback in 2022. It was held at the Peace Park at Hope Botannical Gardens in Kingston Jamaica on November 19, 2022. 

As usual, members of JETAA Jamaica and some of its affiliates gathered by one of the poui trees that it donated to Hope Gardens way back in 2011 to re-enact Hanami, the Japanese tradition of viewing the cherry blossoms (Sakura) while feasting under its blooms.

Unfortunately, there were no blooms to admire. The tree flowered in the spring, a time of year that is not conducive for JETAA Jamaica to host this event. But if the event had been held when "our" tree was flowering, we might have enjoyed a view like the one below:

JETAA Jamaica is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2022, so we decided to mark the event with this lovely cake.

The Japan Exchange and Teaching Programme Alumni Association of Jamaica (JETAA Jamaica) was established in 2002 and operates as a non-profit organisation. The JETAA Jamaica is comprised of persons who worked as Assistant Language Teachers (ALTs) in primary, junior high and senior high schools across Japan under the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme. The mission of JETAA Jamaica is to assist in enhancing relations between Jamaica and Japan; promote Japanese culture within Jamaica and serve as a support group for former, current and prospective Jamaican JET participants.

When, how long and where were you in Japan? I was in Japan from July 2000-July 2002. How was your time in Japan? What were some highlights/things you wish had done differently? The two years spent can be described with one word – subarashikatta!! From the pre-departure orientation to the closing ceremony marking the end of my two years, it was a package of new experiences with people from all strata and age groups in Japan. Jamaica's Ambassador-Designate to Japan and JETAA Jamaica Commit to Enhanced Relationship

  Q: When (how long) and where were you in Japan? A: I was in Japan between 2002 and 2004 and lived in the city of Nobeoka, a small town in the north of Miyazaki Prefecture.
