JETAA Jamaica Under New Leadership But Mission Unchanged

JETAA Jamaica held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) in March 2022 at Hotel Four Seasons under the theme, "Moving Forward, Growing stronger". The primary aims of that meeting were to:

  • select a new executive
  • reconfirm its core commitment to enhancing Jamaica's relationship with Japan by sharing the Japanese culture with Jamaicans, primarily in the education system
  • reconfirm its relationship with its affiliates
  • reflect on its achievements over the period, 2021-2022

The following members were selected to the executive of JETAA Jamaica for the 2022-2023 administrative period: Orrette Muir, (President), Larisa McBean, who retained her position as Vice-President, Terrike Brown (Public Relations Officer), David Smalling (Treasurer) and Mario Grant, (Secretary).

The Japan Exchange and Teaching Programme Alumni Association of Jamaica (JETAA Jamaica) was established in 2002 and operates as a non-profit organisation. The JETAA Jamaica is comprised of persons who worked as Assistant Language Teachers (ALTs) in primary, junior high and senior high schools across Japan under the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme. The mission of JETAA Jamaica is to assist in enhancing relations between Jamaica and Japan; promote Japanese culture within Jamaica and serve as a support group for former, current and prospective Jamaican JET participants.

When, how long and where were you in Japan? I was in Japan from July 2000-July 2002. How was your time in Japan? What were some highlights/things you wish had done differently? The two years spent can be described with one word – subarashikatta!! From the pre-departure orientation to the closing ceremony marking the end of my two years, it was a package of new experiences with people from all strata and age groups in Japan. My great memories of riding along the Shimanto Gawa to work, meeting with other JETs and private teachers at Hirome Ichiba or just having ramen with a group of obaasans are priceless. Striking relations with my barber who meticulously created a formula to cut my hair as I was the first black person's hair he was cutting in 20 years – we created a great bond. The cooking classes and fun times at kadai kenkyuu are cherished times that I wish I could take back to Jamaica. I must say that being in Japan taught me a lot about me and Jamaica.

Jamaica's Ambassador-Designate to Japan and JETAA Jamaica Commit to Enhanced Relationship

  As  Ambassador-Designate to Japan, Ms. Shorna-Kay Richards, pre pares for her new assignment,  she met with President  Marsha Dennie and other representatives  of the  Japan Exchange and Teaching Programme Alumni Association of Jamaica (JETAA Jamaica)   on August 12, 2020 as part of a round of Courtesy Calls she is undertaking before she departs for Japan. T he Ambassador-Designate  anticipates that her engagement with  JETAA Jamaica  will be a  "robust, fulfilling and exciting" one.  The virtual meeting afforded Ambassador-Designate Richards the opportunity to outline some of her plans for a "whole of country" approach to her upcoming mission in Japan, in which she envisions forging a much stronger relationship with Jamaicans on the JET Programme in Japan.   Q: When (how long) and where were you in Japan? A: I was in Japan between 2002 and 2004 and lived in the city of Nobeoka, a small town in the north of Miyazaki Prefecture. Q: How was your time in Japan? A : My sojourn in Japan was exciting, exhilarating, rewarding, challenging, frustrating and life-impacting all in one! (smile).
